How Wuhan Coronavirus Impact Dropshipping
CJJan. 26, 2020 12:19:002317

Many companies and factories may have to put off the starting date of normal operation from the Chinese Lunar New Year Holiday due to the accelerating spread of Wuhan Coronavirus.

What is the coronavirus?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).

A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.

Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

What did the coronavirus do?

Sourced from the National Health Commission of China and districts' Health Commission, as of 12:53 on January 26, the number of confirmed cases of new pneumonia was 2005 cases, and others including 2684 suspected cases, 56 died cases and 49 cured cases.

Within a week, almost all 33 provinces excluding Tibet and 3 special administrative districts including Hongkong, Macao and Taiwan province announced confirmed cases.

In addition, the cumulative number of confirmed cases were reported abroad: 4 cases in Thailand (2 cases have been cured), 2 cases in Japan (1 case has been cured), 2 cases in South Korea, 2 cases in the United States, 2 cases in Vietnam, 3 cases in Singapore, and 3 cases in Malaysia. One case was in Nepal, three in France, and one in Australia.

What impact does the coronavirus bring?

Starting at 10 o'clock on January 23, Wuhan, central Chinese city and surrounding cities such as Ezhou, Xiantao, Qianjiang, Huanggang and Jingmen have successively announced the suspension of urban bus, subway, ferry, and long-distance transportation, and temporarily closed airports and trains stations, highways, and other exit corridors to prevent the spread of new coronavirus in Wuhan.

Influenced by this and continuous spread of Wuhan Coronavirus, transportations all around the country are shut down partially or completely which causes almost all workers and employees unable to back to factories and companies to work in which the factories and companies including CJ cannot back to normal operation.

In an exclusive interview, Li Lanjuan, member of Chinese National Academy of Engineering, said that the implementation of the control of personnel in and out of Wuhan is because the epidemic situation has reached an urgent level. Only by strictly controlling the source of infection can we prevent the pandemic from occurring.

On Jan. 24th, provinces like Zhejiang province announced the highest level of emergency including shutting down all entertainment spaces and stopping public activities, taking the strictest inspections and reports on the possible coronavirus cases.

On Jan. 24th, 7 Colleges in Hubei province like Central China Agricultural University, Hubei University of Technology and other provincial colleges like Shanghai University and Southwest Jiaotong University announced to postpone school date.

On Jan. 25th, President Xi announced battle with the new Wuhan Coronavirus the top thing of this country.

On Jan. 26th, it is reported that the State Council encouraged to extend the Chinese Lunar New Year Holiday which is the best period to prevent the spread of Wuhan Coronavirus.

How does this coronavirus influence dropshipping?

1. Factories will not be able to produce products at the expected date. As is known, most suppliers of dropshipping business are from China.

Caused by the new Wuhan Coronavirus, the majority of workers will not be able to come back to suppliers' factories to start producing.

The previous holiday plan allows workers to stay at home until February. According to the current situation, the return date of workers may be delayed.

2. Products cannot be transported by logistics companies. Only medical stuff can be normally transported in such a situation that logistics staff are on holiday and cities’ transportation is blocked.

Without logistics companies, parcels are not able to be shipped out and to their destination even if suppliers and our warehouses have product stocks.

3. Dropshipping companies like CJDropshipping cannot provide complete and excellent services for customers. Required by the government, CJ warehouse staff on duty during CNY cannot continue to work until further notice. CJ planned to operate and process orders as usual on Jan. 31th.

If the severe situation cannot get better in the following days, CJ employees will not be able to back to work from their hometown, let alone processing customers' orders because many villages in China spontaneously block the ways in and out of villages.

Is there a real risk that the parcels coming from China will cause the transmission of the coronavirus?

Postal parcels can be contaminated if there is direct contact and friction between a sick person and the parcel or contaminated with spray or secretions from an infected person.

But the virus cannot live under external conditions (outside of living objects) for more than a few hours at best and then is destroyed by environmental factors.

Surrounding (drought, rays). Therefore, parcels will not pose a threat to the recipients, because they will take weeks and in our case months to arrive.

Because of the Wuhan Coronavirus is still expanding. Our local government shut down the most facility to keep safety. So there will be a delay if you placed the orders that ship from China. We suggest you either stop the FB Ads or Notify your buyer of the real situation since the delay will be a long time.

CJ Sourcing, Dispute, Customer Service team will be available on 31st Jan. But the fulfillment team in China will be starting not earlier than 9th Feb. The exact restarting fulfillment time in China is uncertain yet, we will update you once we get the information from our Local government. CJ highly appreciates your understanding.

CJ hopes China can overcome this coronavirus quickly so that everything can recover to normal.
